What to Expect During a PET/CT Scan

Gulf International Cancer Center
  • Preparation Before the Scan: You may be asked to fast for 4–6 hours before the procedure to ensure accurate results. Avoid strenuous activity 24 hours prior, and inform your healthcare team about any medications or medical conditions, such as diabetes or pregnancy.
  • Tracer Injection: A small amount of a specific radioactive tracer, tailored to your medical condition (e.g., 18-FDG or PSMA), is injected into your bloodstream. You’ll rest quietly for about 30–60 minutes while the tracer circulates and accumulates in the target area.
  • During the Scan: The scan typically takes 20–45 minutes. You’ll lie still on a cushioned table as it moves through the PET/CT scanner, which captures both functional and structural images of your body.
  • After the Scan: You can resume normal activities immediately, as the tracer is safely eliminated from your body naturally. Your doctor may provide additional recommendations based on your results or treatment plan.
