Understanding Radiation Therapy

What Is Radiation Therapy?

Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams, such as X-rays or protons, to destroy or shrink cancer cells. It is one of the most effective and commonly used cancer treatments. Many patients receive it as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can return home the same day.

Types of Radiation Used at GICC

We offer advanced radiation technologies tailored to each patient's needs, including:

  • External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT)
  • IMRT (Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy)
  • VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy)
  • HDR Brachytherapy (Internal Radiation)

Your care team will select the most suitable approach based on your diagnosis, location of the cancer, and overall health.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Your comfort and confidence are important to us. Here are answers to common questions about what happens during your radiation therapy session.

When you arrive, a staff member will check you in and guide you to the treatment area. You may be asked to change into a gown. The medical team will position you carefully on the treatment table using guidance systems to ensure accuracy.

Once positioned, the radiation machine will move around you to deliver treatment. You will be alone in the room, but the team will monitor you through cameras and microphones. The machine may make clicking or buzzing sounds. The treatment itself is painless and typically lasts between 10 and 30 minutes.

Radiation therapy is not painful during the session. You will not feel the beams entering your body. Some patients report mild discomfort from lying still or from prior symptoms, but the treatment itself causes no immediate sensation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most common questions patients ask before beginning radiation therapy.

Yes, unless your doctor has given you specific dietary instructions, you can eat normally before your radiation appointment.

No. External radiation therapy does not make you radioactive. It is completely safe to be around others, including children and pets, after treatment.

The entire visit may last about 30 to 60 minutes, but the actual radiation treatment typically takes only 10 to 30 minutes.

While many patients come alone, it’s perfectly fine to bring someone for support — especially if you're feeling anxious or tired. Some patients find comfort in having a family member nearby.
